Councillor’s Message
It's that time of the year again – market season! I hope you had a chance to take in the first Original Navan Market of the year last Sunday. The inaugural 2024 Cumberland Farmer’s Market is coming up on Saturday, June 1. I encourage you to take in these fantastic opportunities to support our small businesses and of course, stock up on some amazing local goods!Shifting gears, as of this past Monday, Ottawa Police Services launched its new "District Policing Model." This initiative, currently in its pilot phase, is something I've been advocating for, which aims to enhance community engagement and address local concerns more effectively by dedicating resources by geographic area. Orléans South-Navan, along with the five neighbouring wards, now fall under the “East” district. This strategic realignment enables OPS to foster closer collaboration between front-line officers and community stakeholders, ensuring a more tailored approach to tackling issues specific to our ward, including speeding, stunt driving, auto thefts, and vandalism.
As we head into construction season, I want to thank you for your patience as we move forward on important road infrastructure projects. Road renewal has always been a top priority of mine and the community is set to see major work.
A significant investment of more than $17 million is earmarked for road resurfacing projects this year alone including the final section of Frank Kenny Road and sections of Innes Road. While the west section of Navan Road continues to be a source of frustration due to ongoing development, I’m working with contractors in that area to improve the condition of the road in the short term.
My focus also extends to enhancing active transportation, safety, and accessibility. A front-ending agreement is approved for a signalized intersection at Innes and Lamarche, slated to commence construction later this fall. Meanwhile, Renaud Road’s permanent traffic calming measures project will be completed this summer. Detailed design on reconfiguring the intersection of Brian Coburn/Tenth Line is also underway. I am also in discussion with staff about other problematic intersections like Mer Bleue/Décoeur/Copperhead.
As projects slated for this year come through the pipeline, I’ll continue to keep you updated here and on Facebook. Stay tuned!
Recently, I had the pleasure of seeing the continued reforestation efforts of South Nation Conservation staff and students from St. Peter High School and École secondaire publique Gisèle-Lalonde schools and Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Orleans as they planted 200 bur oak seedlings at the Orléans Rotary Youth Forest, located on the McWilliams Farm in our community. Inspiring work by our youth and volunteers!
Finally, I hope all the mothers and mother-figures have a wonderful Mother's Day! Thank you for all that you do 24/7, 365.
Annual culvert replacement program starting
As part of the City’s annual infrastructure maintenance cycle, rural road culvert replacements are starting up again to improve drainage and roadways.
This work is planned to begin in May and end by September. This year, 10 culverts are being replaced on Navan Road, Russell Road, and Langlade Road.
Residents within the impacted area will receive notices closer to the date where the culvert replacement is happening. There will be localized lane closures and road detours while the work takes place.

Millenium Park play structure reopened
The repairs at Millenium Park are now complete, and the play castle has reopened. Thank you for your patience and happy playing!
Improvement to Brian Coburn / Tenth Line intersection
I’m pleased to share that as of this week, a left turn signal was activated at Brian Coburn and Tenth Line for traffic traveling southbound on Tenth line turning left onto Brian Coburn. The signal is activated during the day when 3 or more vehicles are queued.
I have been consistently advocating for improvements to this intersection and am happy to see this change that will improve traffic flow and safety, adding to the improvement last year for an advanced left turn signal at Brian Coburn and Tenth Line for eastbound traffic. As mentioned above, further engineered improvements are currently being designed with construction slated for next year.
New Automated Speed Enforcement camera on Colonial Road
As part of ongoing efforts to enhance safety on our streets, residents may notice signage indicating that an Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) camera is coming to Colonial Road between Delson Drive and Frank Kenny Road in front of Heritage Public School.
Once the infrastructure is installed and a testing phase has been completed, the camera will begin to issue tickets to those in excess of speed limits in the specified area.
Reminder to all to slow down, especially near school zones!

Be prepared, know your risks if there’s an emergency
Over the past several years, Ottawa residents, businesses and visitors have experienced first-hand several different types of weather emergencies. For example, tornadoes and a derecho have damaged homes, uprooted trees, and downed power lines; flooding in 2017, 2019 and 2023 caused damage to water-side communities; and, a freezing rainstorm caused branches and power lines to freeze, impacting hydro infrastructure and leaving many residents in the dark.
Emergency Preparedness Week runs this week and it’s a good time to reflect on lessons learned and better prepare for the next emergency.
In the event of an emergency, everyone should aim to be able to take care of themselves and their families for up to 3 days (or 72 hours), at least.
